Sewing for Kids

Ever since I started going to sewing class, my daughter has been asking me to teach her to sew. Yesterday we got the little dude really tired at the park and while he took a 4 hour nap (yes!!!) I decided to teach her to sew.

I remembered a tutorial I had seen for embroidering for kids, so that's what we did. We used shelf liner, a thick needle and some yarn. I had an embroidery hoop in my craft closet which helped tremendously!

We started by doing some simple stitches. When I saw that she had caught on, I drew the shapes she requested. She did great and only needed help when she got distracted. In the end she did two shapes and her name- which is hard to see because of the color yarn she picked.

She loved it so much that I had to force her to put it down so she could eat dinner! I suspect we'll be expanding her sewing/embroidering skills this summer. I've seen some really cute sets for kids that I'm excited to research further as I think she could make some really cute projects for family gifts.

How sweet to be able to teach your daughter something that she is so eager to learn! I remember asking my mom to teach me how to embroider and I did it for awhile when I was younger.

I am impressed your son took such a long nap, don't you just love it when they do that!

What a brilliant way of doing it - I've been having my daughter work on plastic canvas - but I really like this idea...

That looks like great fun and something that can be displayed so proudly.

I love it, it will be so super sweet to look back at her various projects later. I think it's great to start kids early with hobbies. Plus it gives them a real sense of accomplishment.
